Grenada Traditional Mas Festival

Although Grenada Is a relatively small and quiet island, islanders know how to party at carnival time! Known locally as ’playing a mas’ the biggest island-wide fete is the annual SpiceMas carnival.

Leading to Spicemas which falls on the second Monday and Tuesday of August, the island of Grenada is alive with concerts and competitions – felled with beauty, music, and costume – in addition, All kinds of parties everywhere – beaches, streets, fields, stadiums, boats, restaurants, back yards, front yards.

Each parish has its own brand of traditional mas usually represented by Short Knees, Vekou, and Wild Indians.

Traditional Mas Festival is a traditional costume competition celebrating historical carnival costumes. It is held in the town of Victoria in the parish of St. Marks, on the West coast of the island of Grenada WI. Victoria a quiet fishing town with lovely wooden houses and a homely feel. Victoria is the smallest parish on the island in both areas and the populace with approximately 4,000 people residing.

With fancy Arab-like head coverings, comprising mainly of jumbo collars, batwing sleeves, and three-quarter (short knee) baggy trousers, the Short knee Bands are now the most prevalent of the traditional masqueraders reminding us why they are integral and enshrined in our carnival celebrations. Almost identical in appearance, they dance through the roads from their respective villages, into the town of St. George’s, passionately chanting, boxing the air, and scattering baby powder with abandon.
